La estatua contemporánea del rey Afonso Henriques fue diseñada por el escultor João Cutileiro y fue colocada aquí en 2001. Esta estatua representa la memoria del pasado con la impronta y la lectura del presente. Representa la figura de un soldado , con su espada y escudo. Es una estatua llena de poder, con un Afonso Henriques poderoso y seguro.
Hay otro monumento en homenaje al mismo personaje frente a la entrada principal del Palacio de los Duques de Bragança.
