El Ponte do Pinhão fue diseñado por el famoso estudio de arquitectura de Gustave Eiffel . Aunque el propio Eiffel no participó directamente en la construcción, su estudio se encargó del diseño.
La construcción del puente comenzó en 1903 y fue inaugurado en 1906 .
La línea del Duero, a la que pertenece este puente, fue construida a finales del siglo XIX (el tramo hasta Pinhão se terminó en 1880) y fue de gran importancia para el transporte de personas y mercancías, especialmente el vino de Oporto de la región.
El puente está cerca de la famosa estación de tren de Pinhão , conocida por sus hermosos paneles de azulejos del siglo XIX que representan escenas del cultivo de la vid y la vida cotidiana en la región.
