La caída de Constantinopla en manos de los turcos otomanos el martes 29 de mayo de 1453 fue un hecho histórico que, en la periodización clásica, y según algunos historiadores, marcó el fin de la Edad Media en Europa y el fin del último vestigio del Imperio romano de Oriente.
Puede decirse que el declive de Constantinopla, la capital del Imperio romano de Oriente, comenzó en 1190 durante los preparativos de la Tercera Cruzada en los reinos de Occidente. Los bizantinos, creyendo que no había posibilidades de vencer a Saladino , decidieron mantenerse neutrales. Con esta reticencia bizantina como excusa, y con la codicia por los tesoros de Constantinopla como motor, los cruzados tomaron por asalto la ciudad en 1204, ya en la Cuarta Cruzada, dando origen al efímero Imperio latino que duró hasta 1261.
