La República de Nóvgorod fue un extenso estado medieval que ocupaba territorios de la actual Rusia, desde el mar Báltico hasta los montes Urales, entre los siglos XII y XV. Su capital era la ciudad epónima de Nóvgorod.
Nóvgorod funcionó como la capital original del pueblo Rus hasta 882, cuando Oleg transfirió su administración a Kiev. Desde esta fecha hasta 1019-1020, Nóvgorod fue parte del Rus de Kiev. Los príncipes de Nóvgorod eran nombrados por el Gran Príncipe de Kiev . Nóvgorod era una especie de centro espiritual por la leyenda de haber sido la primera ciudad de Rus, y todavía posee las reliquias de las creencias tradicionales que precedieron al cristianismo y que hoy forman parte de la historia olvidada.
