La Expedición Donner fue un grupo de pioneros estadounidenses, liderados por George Donner y James F. Reed, quienes se dirigieron a la región de California en una caravana de carretas, la cual se retrasó por una serie de contratiempos y errores, lo que provocó que pasaran el invierno de 1846-1847 en la Sierra Nevada. Varios de los migrantes recurrieron al canibalismo para sobrevivir.
El viaje al Oeste por lo general tomaba entre cuatro y seis meses, pero la Expedición Donner se ralentizó siguiendo una nueva ruta, llamada el Atajo de Hastings , la cual cruzaba el actual estado de Utah, atravesando las montañas Wasatch y el Gran desierto del Lago Salado. Lo abrupto del terreno y las dificultades encontradas durante el viaje a lo largo del río Humboldt (en la actual Nevada causaron la pérdida de mucho ganado y carros, además de divisiones internas en el grupo.
