À partir du 11ème siècle, le territoire de Gand s'est agrandi grâce à l'adjonction de divers fiefs. Une attraction importante pour l'expansion vers l'ouest était sans doute l'établissement d'une résidence comtale sur la rive ouest de la Leie. Ce domaine comtal comprenait, outre le château du Gravensteen, une localité (l'Oudburg, une partie du Patershol) et une cour (l'actuel Sint-Veerleplein). L'ensemble a été annexé au cours du 13ème siècle.
