La Leopold II-laan contourne élégamment la plus célèbre statue féminine d’Oostende : « De Zee » (la Mer). Parfois appelée « Liggend Naakt » (nu couché), elle est populairement appelée “Dikke Mathille”. Grard accentue le volume des formes courbes, pleines. Dans « De Zee », il représente la générosité et la sensualité de la mer dans un corps féminin.
L’œuvre d’art a orné le Kursaal jusqu’en 1963.
