La construction du monument de Waterloo a eu lieu entre 1823 et 1826. Il a fallu 290 486 m³ de sable pour ériger une butte de 40 mètres de haut. Au sommet, un lion en fonte de 28 tonnes était placé sur un piédestal de 4,5 mètres. Le lion lui-même a été conçu par le sculpteur de Malines Jean-Louis van Geel. Un anneau souterrain de briques soutient le monument. Le concepteur de l’ensemble était l’architecte Charles Vander Straeten, architecte privé du prince d’Orange et finalement architecte (gouvernemental) des palais royaux et des bâtiments de campagne (d’abord uniquement dans les provinces du sud, plus tard dans tout le Royaume-Uni des Pays-Bas).
