Ce triangle frontalier était autrefois un point de quatre pays, ce qui est une grande rareté dans le monde. Le Vierlandenpunt a été formé par la Belgique, la Prusse/Allemagne, les Pays-Bas et Moresnet neutre.
En raison de l’indépendance de la Belgique en 1830, le Drielandenpunt sur le Neutraleweg près d’Ottersum a été supprimé et un point de quatre pays a été créé sur le Vaalserberg entre la Belgique, d’abord la Prusse et plus tard l’Allemagne, les Pays-Bas et Moresnet neutre. En 1919, Neutral-Moresnet est annexé à la Belgique et ce point disparaît.
