La bière brune a fait d'Audenarde une célèbre ville de bière. De l'autre côté de l'Escaut, on peut voir les bâtiments de la célèbre brasserie Liefmans. C'est là qu'en 1770 la première 'brune' a été tirée. Aujourd'hui, elle est encore brassée selon une recette vieille de 300 ans. La bière de cerise n'a commencé à mousser ici que beaucoup plus tard. Les installations de brassage, avec chaudières, refroidisseurs et coolers baudelot, sont encore fabriquées en cuivre rouge.
Aujourd'hui, Liefmans fait partie du Groupe Duvel Moortgat.
