Juste avant que les Gueux n'occupent Lede le 8 mai 1581, ils avaient déjà pris le château. La conquête s'est déroulée selon le Geuzenboek de Boon plutôt facilement, car les soldats défendant le château n'ont guère ou pas du tout résisté aux troupes Gueux qui avancent. À ce moment-là, un grand nombre de troupes militaires de Gand s'étaient jointes à ces troupes Gueux.
