La principauté épiscopale de Liège était un État du Saint-Empire romain, compris dans le Cercle de Westphalie, ayant pour capitale la ville de Liège. C'est en l'an 985, que naît la principauté épiscopale. C'est à cette date que Notger, déjà évêque de Liège depuis 972, devient prince-évêque en recevant le comté de Huy. Cet État a existé pendant plus de 800 ans, jusqu'à la révolution liégeoise en 1789.
Liège devint au Xe siècle la capitale d'une puissante principauté épiscopale, grâce à l'action des évêques Éracle, Notger et Wazon. Ses écoles furent célèbres jusqu'au XIIe siècle.
