En tant que vétérinaire inspecteur, Karel Van Noppen devait contrôler les agriculteurs pour l'utilisation d'hormones. Après plusieurs menaces, il a continué son travail. Le 20 février 1995, sa voiture a été arrêtée près de son domicile à Wechelderzande et il a été abattu de trois balles.
En avril 2002, quatre suspects ont été reconnus coupables du meurtre : Carl De Schutter, Albert Barrez, Alex Vercauteren et Germain Daenen. Ce groupe est devenu connu sous le nom de "maffia des hormones".
