L'écrivain Conscience a popularisé la bataille des Éperons d'or en 1838 dans son magnum opus De Leeuw van Vlaanderen. L'homme qui a "appris à lire à son peuple" a cependant un peu enjolivé la vérité. Conscience parlait de dizaines de milliers de soldats sur le Groeningeveld. En réalité, environ 8 000 Flamands se trouvaient face à à peu près autant de soldats français, certes beaucoup mieux armés. Il convient également de faire quelques réserves sur cette "force" flamande : le commandant en chef Jan Van Renesse était un Zélandais, le principal autre dirigeant était Gwijde de Namur - il est vrai, le nom a son importance - de Namur. Robert de Béthune, le "Lion des Flandres" du roman de Conscience, n'était pas du tout présent sur le champ de bataille le 11 juillet 1302.
