On a longtemps pensé que l'arbre de la liberté de Morkhoven avait été planté pendant la Révolution brabançonne (1789-1791). L'arbre qui a été planté à l'époque a disparu pendant les temps troublés qui ont suivi. L'arbre a probablement été remplacé par un nouvel arbre de la liberté à la suite de l'indépendance belge. Une analyse spécialisée des cernes des arbres montre que la date de plantation du tilleul hollandais en pleine croissance se situe autour de 1830.
