En 1909, une statue de l'humaniste, latiniste et historien Justus Lipsius (Overijse 1547 - Louvain 1606), professeur à l'Université de Louvain à partir de 1592, fut érigée sur ce site pour remplacer une fontaine en fonte qui y était placée depuis 1890. Il se compose d'un haut socle en pierre bleue de style néoclassique, signé "J. JOURDAIN - SCULPTEUR" et "H. VAES. V. CRETEN - ARCHITECTES" et d'une sculpture en bronze fondue par Felix Van Aerschodt (voir inscription). Le monument a été offert à la Ville par l'État belge à l'occasion du 75e anniversaire du rétablissement (1834-1909) de l'Université catholique de Louvain, voir l'inscription "JUSTO.LIPSIO/ IN.ALMA.UNIVERSITATE/ LOVANIENSI. PROFESSORI/ ADMCMIX .RESTITUAE/ UNIVERSITATIS.LXXV/ LEOPOLDO.II/ REGE. BELGARUM".
