Le renouvellement de la digue maritime à Westende a été réalisé par phases entre 2021 et 2023, avec l'inauguration festive de la nouvelle digue verte et de l'extension atténuante des vagues (GDU) le 24 juin 2023. Le projet fait partie du plan directeur pour la défense côtière. Il comprend une combinaison d'une digue herbeuse et d'une digue d'extension atténuante « dure » pour une meilleure protection et une promenade embellie.
Entre les 2 promenades, un jardin botanique a été aménagé avec des plantes spécifiques côtières et halophiles.
