Le pont de 1198 a été construit par les Uri. Il s'appelait la "Teufelsbrücke" ou "Pont du Diable". Ce chef-d'œuvre semblait un pacte avec le diable pour la plupart des gens. La construction de la Teufelsbrücke et de la Twärrenbrücke dans la partie supérieure de la Schöllenen a ouvert la porte vers le sud. Les marchands ont rapidement découvert que le chemin le plus rapide vers l'Italie passait par le col du Gothard.
