Thomas Mann s'est inspiré du sanatorium de Davos où sa femme Katia a été soignée en 1911. Cela l'a conduit à écrire son roman La Montagne magique (1924), dans lequel il décrit la vie dans un sanatorium comme un microcosme de réflexions philosophiques et existentielles. Situé dans le sanatorium fictif « Berghof », basé sur Davos, le livre traite de thèmes tels que la maladie, la mort et le temps.
