Le château de Chillon a été rendu célèbre par Lord Byron, qui a écrit le poème Le Prisonnier de Chillon (1816) sur François de Bonivard, un moine et homme politique genevois qui y a été emprisonné de 1530 à 1536 ; Byron a également gravé son nom sur un pilier du donjon. Le château est l'un des décors de la nouvelle de Henry James, Daisy Miller (1878).
