Martigny est une commune et une ville du canton du Valais, située dans le district de Martigny dont elle est le chef-lieu. Sise au coude du Rhône, au croisement des axes routiers du Grand-Saint-Bernard et du Simplon. Par sa population , Martigny est la deuxième ville du canton, après Sion.
Le nom latin d'origine gauloise est Octodurus « les huit portes », graphie à finale latine -us sur la base du gaulois oxtu, huit. Cf. vieil irlandais ocht, tous du celtique octū / oxtū et duron, porte, forum, bourg. Cf. breton, gallois dor, porte, d'où le nom français alternatif d’« Octodure ».
