La majeure partie de la vallée se situe dans le district de Maloja dans le canton des Grisons et la partie inférieure dans la province de Sondrio en Italie. La vallée comprend les anciennes communes suisses de Vicosoprano, Stampa, Bondo, Soglio et Castasegna , et les municipalités italiennes de Villa di Chiavenna, Piuro et Chiavenna.
