Bordée par le Rhin et les contreforts des montagnes Alpstein, Montlingen se trouve au milieu de la vallée du Rhin de Saint-Gall. Il appartient, avec Kriessern, Eichenwies, Kobelwald et d’autres hameaux, à la communauté politique d’Oberriet.
La partie la plus ancienne du village est située au pied du Montlinger Berg, les nouveaux quartiers résidentiels sont répartis autour du « Bergli ». Sur son côté nord se trouve l’ancienne carrière « Kolbenstein », qui était reliée par une voie au chemin de fer de service du Règlement international du Rhin à l’époque de la réglementation rhénane du Rhin.
