Gotha est une ville allemande de Thuringe, la cinquième par sa population. Chef-lieu de l'arrondissement du même nom, elle est située à 23 km à l'ouest d'Erfurt, la capitale du Land.
Gotha doit sa renommée à son rôle de capitale et de résidence des ducs de Saxe-Gotha de 1640 à 1918. Elle fut un des centres de l'édition en Allemagne et un grand centre des sciences naturelles, ce dont témoignent le Musée d'Histoire Naturelle et son observatoire. La ville est dominée par la silhouette du château de Friedenstein, résidence des ducs de Saxe-Gotha-Altenbourg, puis des ducs de Saxe-Cobourg-Gotha.
