Jena était un centre de science et de littérature à la fin du XVIIIe et au début du XIXe siècle. Le berceau de l'idéalisme allemand et du romantisme allemand. L'université était l'une des plus célèbres du pays. Le poète et dramaturge Friedrich Schiller a travaillé ici à l'Université de Jena. Vous pouvez encore voir son buste ici à Jena. Schiller était également un bon ami de Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, qui vivait à environ 25 km à Weimar. Le frère du célèbre scientifique Alexander von Humboldt a également vécu ici à Jena, avec sa jeune famille.
