Gerolstein est une petite ville allemande de l'Eifel, sise dans l'arrondissement de Vulkaneifel , productrice d'eaux minérales, et dominée par son château médiéval. La ville est aussi le chef-lieu du Verbandsgemeinde de Gerolstein.
Le Gerolstein est également un pays imaginaire d'Europe centrale, rendu célèbre par La Grande-duchesse de Gérolstein de Jacques Offenbach en 1867. Toutefois, le grand-duché de Gerolstein avait déjà été évoqué, pour la première fois semble-t-il, dans Les Mystères de Paris d'Eugène Sue , où le souverain du petit État est Rodolphe, mystérieux héros du récit séjournant incognito à Paris. Il apparaît également dans le roman Prince Othon de Robert Louis Stevenson .
