Il y a une légende selon laquelle Breme restera libre et indépendante tant que le gardien Roland veille sur la ville. Pour cette raison, on prétend qu'une deuxième statue de Roland est cachée dans les voûtes souterraines de l'hôtel de ville, qui peut être rapidement installée en substitution, si l'original venait à tomber.
La statue a été ajoutée à la liste des sites du patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO.
Il y a plusieurs statues de Roland à Brême. La plus célèbre se trouve devant l'hôtel de ville, faisant face à la cathédrale.
