Helmstedt est une ville allemande située dans le dans le Land de Basse-Saxe dans le nord de l’Allemagne, sur l’axe Hanovre-Berlin, au cœur d’un grand parc naturel.
Helmstedt s'est développé à proximité de l'abbaye bénédictine fondée autour de l'an 800 par le missionnaire Ludger, premier évêque du diocèse. L'abbaye de Werden est son abbaye sœur.
