Elle possède la plus grande base navale d'Allemagne: le port de Jade Weser. En construction depuis mars 2008, son inauguration a eu lieu le 21 septembre 2012.
Wilhelmshaven a obtenu son nom en juin 1869 du roi Guillaume Ier d'Allemagne, le futur empereur allemand. En raison de sa position unique et protégée, elle y vit la construction, quelques années plus tôt, de bâtiments pour la marine au beau milieu du Oldenbourg le long de la Jade.
