Le Sauerland est une région touristique rurale et vallonnée de Rhénanie-du-Nord-Westphalie, populaire auprès des cyclistes, des randonneurs et des amateurs de sports d’hiver. On dit que Sauerland vient étymologiquement du nom de Suderland. Cela était déjà mentionné dans un document de 1266. Le nom fait donc référence au « pays du sud » et n’a donc rien à voir avec « aigre » ou « sauer ».
