Le vieux noyau villageois de Donsbrüggen est situé à la périphérie de la Düffel autour de l'église Saint-Lambert. En direction de Kleve et Materborn, les chaînes de collines de la forêt impériale de Kleve commencent au sud de la route fédérale 9.
Les origines de Donsbrüggen remontent au début du Moyen Âge franc; à 100 m au sud-ouest de l'église, des tombes du 6e siècle ont été découvertes. Il faisait partie de Hattuarien dans la partie franque d'Austrasie. En 721/22, le comte franc Ebroin, fils d'Oda, a donné à l'église de Rindern, dont le missionnaire anglo-saxon et évêque Willibrord était alors le responsable, des biens à Donsbrüggen, plus précisément des terres forestières à « Dangaes-broch », qui s'étendaient jusqu'à Mehr et Rindern; plus tard, l'abbaye d'Echternach fondée par Willibrord et l'abbaye carolingienne de Saint-Quentin possédaient des terres ici.
