Vieux de plus de mille ans, il fut donné en 1166 par Frédéric Barberousse à un de ses fidèles comme fief d'Empire. Celui-ci prit le nom de l’endroit comme nom de famille, «de Schönburg», et lui et ses successeurs firent fortune en exploitant le péage sur le fleuve à Oberwesel. Le château fut détruit par les troupes de Louis XIV pendant la guerre de la Ligue d'Augsbourg. Le château fut reconstruit à partir de 1885. Il est désormais utilisé comme hôtel et hébergement de jeunesse.
