En 1909, Malstatt-Burbach a rejoint l’ancienne Sarrebruck et Sankt Johann pour former l’actuelle ville de Sarrebruck.
Malstatt reçut les droits municipaux en 1321. Ceux-ci, cependant, furent ensuite résignés dans la nouvelle ville de Sarrebruck, et en 1818, Malstatt et Burbach étaient deux petits villages avec une population combinée d’environ 800 habitants. Vers le milieu du siècle, la population commença à augmenter rapidement, à la suite du développement de l’industrie minière du district et de l’extension du système ferroviaire, et en 1874, les deux villages furent réunis pour former une ville.
