La centrale de Zschornewitz était l'une des plus anciennes centrales électriques d'Allemagne et est aujourd'hui un monument industriel.
En 1913, les Berliner Elektrizitäts-Werke ont atteint leurs limites de capacité, c'est pourquoi de nouveaux contrats d'approvisionnement en électricité devaient être négociés avec la ville de Berlin. À l'époque, l'AEG était le leader dans le domaine de la production d'énergie électrique et souhaitait fournir de l'électricité à distance à Berlin. Par conséquent, une centrale avec six turbines à vapeur d'une puissance électrique de 16 MW chacune et 60 chaudières à vapeur ayant chacune 450 m² de surface de chauffe a été projetée. Le lignite nécessaire devait provenir de la zone de surface minière de Golpa-Jeßnitz. Pour le site de la centrale, trois projets étaient liés à l'approvisionnement en eau de refroidissement pour la centrale.
