L'église principale évangéliste-luthérienne St. Johannis est la plus ancienne église de la ville de Lüneburg. Elle est située sur la place Am Sande, au centre-ville, et est considérée comme un monument important du gothique en briques du nord de l'Allemagne.
L'église hall à cinq nefs de style gothique a été construite entre 1289 et 1470. Une première mention écrite de l'édifice précédent remonte à 1174. La majeure partie du bâtiment de l'église a été achevée en 1372, tandis que le clocher a été complété en 1384 avec une hauteur de 110 mètres. Après quelques autres extensions, la construction de l'église peut être considérée comme achevée en 1470.
