La salle de manifestation est située à proximité du centre commercial Westfield Centro. La durée de construction a été de 14 mois et le coût de construction s'élevait à 45 millions €. L'arène a été officiellement ouverte le 12 septembre 1996. Le groupe de rock Status Quo a donné son premier concert le 21 septembre. À l'origine, la salle a été ouverte sous le nom d'Arena Oberhausen, jusqu'à ce qu'elle soit renommée König-Pilsener-Arena pendant 20 ans en raison d'un sponsoring de nom par la brasserie König de 2002 à 2021.
Le 2 décembre 2021, il a été annoncé que Rudolf Weber Gebäudereinigung et Gebäudedienste GmbH & Co. KG d'Essen deviendrait le nouveau sponsor de nom de la König-Pilsener-Arena. Le contrat avec ASM Global est en vigueur depuis le 1er janvier 2022.
