La source du Humbach se trouve dans une prairie au nord-est d'Ilmenau, immédiatement à l'est de la sortie A 71 Ilmenau-Ouest, dans la commune de Bücheloh. En dessous du village, il forme une vallée où se trouvent la B 87 ainsi que les étangs du Humbach.
Les étangs du Humbach sont des étangs artificiels, rectangulaires, qui servent principalement à l'élevage de poissons.
Au-dessus de la vallée se trouve le pont de Humbachtal de 290 mètres de long, qui fait partie de l'itinéraire de la ligne à grande vitesse Nürnberg–Erfurt.
