Première maison en pierre d'Amérique et probablement la première à avoir deux niveaux. Son nom vient du cordon qu'elle exhibe sur sa façade associé à l'ordre franciscain. Elle a été commandée par Don Francisco de Garay, un compagnon de voyage du premier voyage de Christophe Colomb qui fut ensuite gouverneur de la Jamaïque.
Les vice-rois Diego Colón et María de Toledo y ont brièvement vécu pendant la construction de l'Alcázar.
Pendant l'incursion de Francis Drake, cette maison a accueilli la balance où devaient être pesés les biens que les habitants devaient remettre au corsaire.
