La route commence à 9 km au sud de Burgos sur l'Autovía A-1. Elle se dirige vers le sud-est à travers la Sierra de las Mamblas, s'élevant au-dessus des Mazariegos et passant par Muela. Elle continue à travers les montagnes jusqu'à Soria, passant au-dessus du Puerto Mojón Pardo avec la Reserva Nacional de Urbión dans la Sierra de Urbión au nord, s'élevant à 2 229 m. Cette chaîne est également la source du fleuve Duero.
