Les Annales d'Ulster rapportent que le comte d'Atholl, Thomas fitz Roland, a construit le château en 1214. Il a ensuite été détruit par Hugh de Lacy et le roi de Tír Eoghain, Aodh Méith Ó Néill, comme le confirme la même source en 1223.
Les Annales d'Ulster rapportent également que Thomas a reconstruit le château en 1228. Il y a des preuves suggérant que Thomas n'aurait peut-être pas été en mesure d'entreprendre des travaux de reconstruction. En 1225, il devait une annuité de 100 marques en compensation de ses pertes irlandaises. En 1227, il a déclaré qu'il avait été appauvri en servant la Couronne anglaise en Irlande. S'il n'était pas Thomas qui a reconstruit le château de Coleraine, il est possible que cela ait été Hugh. Cependant, le seul enregistrement de Hugh opérant dans les terres de Thomas se produit presque deux décennies plus tard, en 1241.
