À l'origine un camp de prisonniers de guerre, il a été construit sur un terrain agricole à la périphérie de Malton au début de 1942, par un petit contingent de personnel militaire qui avait voyagé depuis Castle Douglas, en Écosse. Leur tâche était de construire une clôture de fil barbelé et d'ériger des tentes pour former un camp temporaire afin d'accueillir des prisonniers de guerre italiens qui avaient été capturés par les forces alliées en Afrique du Nord.
