Du point le plus à l'ouest au sommet le plus élevé

Des montagnes, effrayantes ou non, d'innombrables lacs (les lochs) et une côte sans fin: voilà en quelques mots les ingrédients principaux des Western Highlands. Un paysage sauvage, parfois dénudé, mais toujours magnifique. La longueur de la côte s'explique par les nombreux bras de mer, parfois très profonds, qui peuvent d'enfoncer très loin à l'intérieur des terres. Les montagnes semblent sortir directement de la mer. L'intérieur est entaillé de larges vallées creusées par les glaciers et occupées au cours du temps par des lacs. On peut les comparer aux fjords norvégiens. Dans les seuls Western Highlands, on dénombre neuf sea lochs ou lacs marins.
