Le lac Stymphalia est un paradis pour un ornithologue, mais aussi pour ceux qui aiment la mythologie, car c'était la zone où vivaient les oiseaux de Stymphale. Ce étaient des oiseaux carnivores avec des ailes en laiton et des plumes métalliques pointues qu'ils pouvaient lancer sur leurs victimes, et ils étaient les animaux de compagnie d'Arès, le dieu de la guerre. De plus, leurs excréments étaient hautement toxiques. C'était l'une des 12 tâches d'Héraclès de se débarrasser des oiseaux. D'Athena et Héphaïstos, il obtint d'énormes claquements en bronze pour effrayer les oiseaux. Il pouvait tirer sur les oiseaux en plein vol.
