La tête décapitée de saint Jean-Baptiste joue un rôle important dans son martyre. Selon la tradition, Jean-Baptiste fut emprisonné et décapité sur ordre du roi Hérode Antipas, après que Salomé, la fille d'Hérodiade, à l'insistance de sa mère, demanda la tête sur un plateau en récompense de sa danse. La tête fut donnée à Salomé, qui la remit à sa mère. Les disciples de Jean récupérèrent ensuite le corps et l'ensevelirent. Cette tête symbolise le martyre et est commémorée chaque année le 29 août tant dans les traditions catholiques qu'orthodoxes.
