Campo Imperatore a été populaire auprès des cinéastes. Le site a été utilisé dans plus de vingt films, parmi lesquels The American, Le Nom de la Rose, Krull, Ladyhawke, Il sole anche di notte et L'Armata ritorna. Campo Imperatore est une prairie de montagne ou un pré alpin formé par un plateau en forme de bassin élevé. C'est le plus grand plateau de la chaîne des Apennins. Connu sous le nom de "Petit Tibet" en Italie, il est situé dans le Parc national du Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga. Campo Imperatore a une origine tectonique façonnée par des alluvions et des glaciers. Le plateau, qui mesure 27 km de long et en moyenne 8 km de large, est adjacent au plus haut sommet des Apennins, le Corno Grande, et au glacier le plus méridional d'Europe, le Calderone. L'altitude du plateau varie de 1 500 à 1 900 mètres. Il couvre une superficie d'environ 80 km². Campo Imperatore abrite l'une des plus anciennes stations de ski alpines d'Italie.
