Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, du 11 février au 15 juillet 1944, la ville a été le siège provisoire du gouvernement italien.
Salerne est située sur le golfe du même nom, partie de la mer Tyrrhénienne entre la côte amalfitaine au nord et la plaine du Sele au sud. Son altitude varie du niveau de la mer à 953 m au mont Stella. Elle est arrosée par le fleuve Irni.
