L'église, dont le cloître appartenait d'abord aux moines bénédictins et à partir du XIIe siècle aux moines camaldules, a été construite vers 1016 et rénovée à plusieurs reprises, notamment après les raids aériens de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. La façade extérieure, épargnée par les bombardements, date du XIIIe-XIVe siècle, tandis que l'intérieur date du XIe-XIIe siècle et a été fortement remanié.
L'intérieur monumental, largement rénové, comporte trois nefs et huit travées et est couvert de fermes dans la nef centrale.
A l'intérieur se trouve un crucifix en marbre, attribué à Nino Pisano (XIVe siècle). Le maître-autel en marbre polychrome du XVIIIe siècle représente la Vierge à l'Enfant et les saints.
