Johan de Witt fut grand-pensionnaire de Hollande de 1653 à 1672. Il meurt avec son frère Cornelis massacré par la foule.
Né en 1625 dans une famille patricienne de Dordrecht, il est le plus important représentant de la bourgeoisie hollandaise dans le gouvernement de la république des Provinces-Unies, qu'il dirige de fait pendant 20 ans.
