C'est ici, dans ce jardin botanique à Leyde, que le médecin et botaniste allemand Philipp Franz von Siebold a planté le renouée du Japon. Il se rendit à Batavia en 1822 en tant que chirurgien-major de l'armée néerlandaise et y apporta la Fallopia japonica. C'est la plante envahissante la plus agressive que nous devons maintenant combattre dans notre région. Vers 1841, le bouturage à Leyde commença son chemin incontrôlable à travers tout le continent européen.
