Ce village dans le Neder-Betuwe faisait partie de l'ancienne commune de Beusichem de 1811 à 1817, de l'ancienne commune de Maurik de 1818 à 1998 et depuis 1999 de la commune de Buren. Le même nom de lieu se retrouve également dans le Brabant-Septentrional et en Hollande-Méridionale.
En 1915 et 1916, des traces d'une installation du IIe siècle après Jésus-Christ ont été découvertes dans les zones inondables, à l'Essenbosch, peut-être le castellum romain Levefanum.
